An extensive two-month journey around Australia has been cancelled days after the fatal incident of an older woman who was stranded by the ship on a remote coastal location.

Suzanne Rees had been walking on the tropical location with shipmates from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the group for a pause. The vessel left without her and returned several hours later after the crew discovered the woman was not present.

An extensive rescue mission located her remains the next day.

Authorities are looking into the tragedy, alongside law enforcement and the official investigator.

Chief Executive of the shipping company stated that travelers and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were notified that the remainder of the voyage had been terminated due to the "sad loss and earlier engine troubles".

Via official communication, he added that travelers would be given a total repayment, and said the operator was working "to organize the return journeys of the individuals via chartered flights".

Authorities also issued an updated statement, and said they had "delivered a directive to the Master" banning any new passengers from entering the liner.

The representative said that they would visit the ship in Cairns upon its arrival.

Timeline of Occurrences

The liner first departed the Australian port on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the voyage at the time of the elderly woman's death. The tropical location was the first stop on the voyage.

Passengers on board - who generally pay large sums of money to take part in the expedition - were taken there for a daily excursion with the option of trekking or underwater exploration.

Relatives Statement

The daughter of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "stunned and grieved that the vessel left Lizard Island after an organised excursion without my parent".

In her statement, she portrayed her mother as an "energetic octogenarian" who was a affiliate of a hiking club.

"According to scant details we have been informed, it looks that there was a breakdown of attention and common sense," she stated.

She continued that she hoped the examination would be able to identify what "the organization should have performed that might have saved Mother's life".

"According to reports from the investigators that it was a very hot period, and mum became unwell on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"They requested her to head down, without accompaniment. Then the vessel left, apparently without doing a passenger count.

"At some stage in that process, or shortly after, mother succumbed, alone."

Operator Position

Through an announcement, the Head affirmed that the company was "collaborating extensively with investigators to support their investigation".

He mentioned that the company was "extremely apologetic that this has happened" and had provided its complete assistance to the relatives.

Cruise Industry Practices

The vessel caters for up to 120 travelers with nearly fifty staff, according to company details. It was specially constructed to access remote regions of Australia's shoreline and is outfitted with "small boats" - small boats used to ferry passengers on shore trips.

Occurrences such as this are rare, and passenger vessels have protocols to document which individuals are boarding or disembarking, according to maritime specialists.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] aboard simply isn't an possibility," one expert remarked.

Vessel operators consider these processes with great importance and have "sophisticated systems in place to prevent such incidents from occurring," the authority further stated.

"This appears to be most likely a surprising - and unfortunate - isolated incident."
